The Doctrine of Propitiation: by R.W. Glenn, and more Gospel Truth....

[Don't forget to attend the conference tonight at the Elk River High School, 6:30pm. Christian apologist Chris Rosebrough will shed a much needed biblical light on the concerns people have regarding The Crossing church and the leader, Eric Dykstra. This is a free event. Non-perishable food donations requested]

THE DOCTRINE OF PROPITIATION
This two and a half minute video by my pastor RW Glenn explains an essential doctrine of the Gospel. Plus, this video, with it's "kinetic typography" is super cool to watch!

Crossing people, is this what you are being taught in your church? Or is it all about "do more , give more, and try harder and then God will bless you".

As a Christian, I don't have to "do" anything to merit God's favor. In fact, apart from faith in Christ and trusting what He has "done" for me,  there is absolutely nothing I can "do" to please God. By trusting in Christ and His finished work, I am free from the demands of God's laws.  That doesn't mean I can live any way I want to, but it does mean that because I am under the ministry of the Holy Spirit, God tenderizes my conscience to live the way God wants Christians to live, and therefore protects me from falling away.

Here's an excerpt from a letter I wrote to someone who responded to my blog. I will not mention his name, but it does contain essential Gospel Truth, and it bears repeating.

[We are not justified (declared not guilty) by our works. Apart from faith in Christ, we are incapable of doing anything good to merit God’s approval. One Scripture that is misused to prove that we are justified by our good works is, “You see that a man is justified by works and not faith alone” (James 2:24). That passage directly contradicts Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

To resolve this apparent contradiction, you have to understand the sense in which both James and Paul are writing. Paul is saying that we are not justified by our works. James is saying that works are the result of our justification. Read the whole of James chapter two and the context will be obvious. Read Ephesians 2:1-10.

In other words, I don’t go to Elk River and hand out conference flyers to gain God’s approval. I hand out the flyers because God has caused me to be born again, and as a result of the Holy Spirit’s work in me, I want to hand out flyers. I want to "contend earnestly for the faith" as God commands  in Jude 3-4.

You see the difference? God does not justify us because we do more, give more, and try harder! That is never, ever the case! It is everywhere in Scripture.

The fact is, we cannot come remotely close to living up to God’s standards set forth in Scripture. After all, when was the last time you had a sinful thought, said a harsh word, or committed a sinful act? Have you loved the God of the Bible with heart, soul, mind, and strength, every second of every day for the entirity of your life?

Jesus said a couple of interesting things in His famous, “Sermon on the Mount” that should bring clarity. “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” [Outwardly, these spiritual leaders were as righteous as you could possibly be] And again in Matthew five, “Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48)

These verses are intended to make us fall on our knees and say, “I can’t be perfect, never. My righteousness will never, ever surpass that of the Scribes and Pharisees. I am lost, ruined! I will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven because I haven’t lived up to God’s standards set in the Scriptures. God help me!!" As a Christian I sin countless times every day! I cannot go ten seconds without sinning! I am a complete mess in thought, word, deed and complete devotion to God!

But, what is so liberating about the Gospel is that Christians don’t have to do more, give more, and try harder to please God. We don’t! Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.  For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

You see, the people of Jesus’ day were weighed down and breaking under the legalistic burden placed upon them by the Scribes and Pharisees. They had to do more and try harder, never being able to live up to their man-made standards. These people were weary of trying to merit God’s favor in order to be justified, and they lived in constant fear that they were not "doing" enough. There was no assurance that they were approved by God.

Then Jesus comes along and says, “Just trust me, that is all you have to do”, and it rocked their world!

Think about this: false religion is a “do” religion. True religion is a “done” religion. People living under false religion think, “What do I have to “do” in order to be granted salvation, gain God’s approval, or receive God's blessing?" While people living under True religion-the Gospel-think, “I don’t have to “do” anything to earn God’s approval because Jesus came and has already “done” what I cannot "do"; He gained God's approval for me!

I perform deeds pleasing to God because I am so grateful to God for saving me through what Jesus has accomplished for me.

Just think of your response to the question I asked, “If you died today and found yourself standing before God, and He asked, "Why should I allow you into My Heaven?" Your response was, "I don't think Jesus would ask me "Why should I let you in?" I believe He would say, "Well done, my good and faithful servant"...Jesus knows my heart, He knows how much I love Him, what I do to serve Him and I know Jesus and His Father through the understanding of the Word.”
This is reminiscent of the parable of the Prodigal son in Luke 15:11-32. Here’s a bit of the text as it applies to you. The legalistic older brother says, “Look, for so many years I have been serving you and I have never neglected a commandment of yours….” Jesus is talking about the Pharisees here. The younger brother, broken and humbled by his inability to save himself goes to his daddy and simply asks for forgiveness, and his daddy gladly receives him and then throws him a massive party!
Jesus came to fulfill the Law of God that Adam failed to do. He was the second Adam. He lived a perfect life and then went to the cross to be punished for all the sins of every person who would ever believe. The doctrine of “imputation” is clearly recognized in 2 Corinthians 5:21, “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

In other words, on the Cross, Our sins were transferred to Jesus “account”. Then God the Father treated Jesus as if he were the most vile, despicable, sinner the world had ever known. Jesus experienced Hell is some sort of supernatural event we cannot comprehend. Jesus paid the sin debt we could never, ever do on our own.

Just think if you got a credit card bill for a hundred billion trillion dollars. You would be in absolute chaos thinking, “I can’t pay that off! Never can I do it”. Then someone comes along and pays the debt for you! That’s what Jesus accomplished on the cross.

But that’s not all Jesus accomplished. Because Jesus lived a perfect life as the second Adam, His righteousness is transferred to our “account” the moment we trust in Jesus.

This Truth has massive implications in our daily lives as Christians.

First, we are adopted into God’s family. He is our Father and now He loves us as His children. There is never any alienation or anger toward us when we sin because He sees us as perfect as Christ is perfect. He is never upset when we slack off in our bible reading, prayer, or fail to perform well in our ministry at church.

Second, we cannot lose our salvation, ever, ever, because every sin you will ever commit in the future was already paid in full by Jesus on the cross. God did not save you because of your good works, therefore you can never, ever lose your salvation for not being good enough.

Third, you can rest in Christ! You love Him and do good things because He is your Lord and you are loyal to Him. You never have to worry about not doing enough. Christ is our Sabbath rest. He has "done" what you cannot "do". We are free from the bondage of sin and slavery, and to unbiblical rules and regulations. We have liberty to live and do ministry in the ordinary, mundane way we live out our lives at home, at work, in school, or on vacation. Of course we should be involved in Church ministry, but we need not be burdened by orbiting our entire lives, talents, and finances around the church you attend as Eric demands.

In Christ, you are free! Let it sink in and enjoy being free from burdensome and legalistic church rules not found in Scripture. The home page on my blog has a picture of a sturdy chain. I believe with all my heart that, however well intentioned the pastors at The Crossing are, they put their people in chains, in bondage. But the Truth of Jesus, of the Gospel will set you free from those nasty chains.]

APPLICATION:
For every single time you fail to live according to God's standards, look ten times to the Cross and realize that all of your sins were paid in full by Christ. When Jesus said "It is finished", He means, it IS finished!

Don't trust your subjective feelings when you think God does not approve of you when you sin. Rather, trust in the objective fact of the record of your sin being wiped clean, and God sees you as perfect in Christ, even when you sin!

That's the Gospel! Now isn't that better than the legalistic, burdensome garbage coming out of The Crossing church?

God Bless you, Casey

Media attention focuses on The Crossing church

Katie sent me this CBS Article on The Crossing church. It seems that the controversy surrounding The Crossing church and this friday's conference is garnering lot's of attention! Let me know if you have trouble opening the link, because I had troubles, though I was still able to read the article, just not anyone's comments.

Chris Rosebrough deconstructs Eric Dykstra's sermon, "Radical Desciples"

TWISTING SCRIPTURE
Here's an excellent example of the subtly of false teachers and how they twist Scripture to fit their own end. Chris Rosebrough of Pirate Christian Radio/Fighting For The Faith "deconstructs" Dykstra's sermon on "Radical Disciples", demonstrating the technique Dykstra uses to create the illusion that his sermon content is biblical, but in actuality it is not. Very insightful.

CONFERENCE TOMORROW!
Please be aware that tomorrow, friday sept. 9th, is the date of the conference, "Double Crossed By The Crossing Church". This community event is free to all, and all are welcome to attend. Christian apologist Chris Rosebrough will address the concerns of The Crossing church, no doubt comparing their teachings and practices against Scripture to make his point. He will also have a Q&A too.

STILL TIME TO GET THE WORD OUT
I am hoping to get to Elk River tonight and hand out more conference flyers. Sunday I handed out close to seventy. I'll be glad to pair up with anyone who want's to join tonight.

I would like to meet anyone at the conference who visits my blog; I'll be wearing an orange "Glacier Park" baseball cap.

Twenty Scripture Twisting Techniques Of The Cults

Christian apologist Chris Rosebrough of Fighting For The Faith/ Pirate Chriatian Radio has summarized
Twenty Scripture Twisting Techniques Of The Cults , from a book written by James Sire.

By the way, Chris will be in Elk River this friday at 6:30 pm and conducting the "Double Crossed By The Crossing Church" conference at the Elk River High School, conveniently located right across the street from The Crossing!

If you attend The Crossing then you should make every effort to make it to the conference. See if what they teach there really matches up with the Bible.

Report from my two hour outing at Elk River....

I left the west metro area for Elk River about 4pm today, Sunday September 4th. I had forty nine-two page flyers (see prior post) and about fifty gospel tracts titled, "There's a criminal on the loose" (in the "Pages" section of my blog). I didn't really know what kind of approach I would use to distribute the flyers, so I just drove around for a bit just to get a feel for things.

The idea of walking up and down the streets wasn't going to work out because there just were not a lot of people walking the streets. I did notice, however, lots of people around the shopping areas, coming and going. So I just drove around with my windows rolled down. If I saw some young people, or people I thought were parents who would be concerned that their family might be influenced by a cult, I either spoke to them out of my car window, or got out of my car and approached them with papers in hand.

Basically, what I said was, "Are you interested in going to a conference on The Crossing Church this friday? The Crossing is an abusive church and many people have been hurt. I just want to make sure you are aware of The Crossing so that you or your family don't get hurt".

The people I encountered were mostly kind, willing to listen, and took the flyers. I got rid of all forty-nine flyers. It seemed like many of those I talked to knew about of The Crossing. A few people were definitely interested in the conference because they knew someone involved in The Crossing and wanted them to attend. I met a couple of people who attended The Crossing. One woman I encountered said she had no interest in going to the conference, and that she believed everything The Crossing taught. How sad!

I also saw a guy and a young boy walking to their car. They got in and I drove up next to them and asked from the window of my vehicle if he would be interested in going to the conference. He said, "Is this the conference put on by Pirate Christian Radio?" I said "Yes". His face suddenly looked familiar from the "I Love My Church" video. By then I realized that I might be talking to Tom, one of The Crossing pastors! He asked for a flyer, so I gave him one. I asked him what his name was, and he said, "Tom". I knew  right away that my instincts were correct.

So it's obvious that Crossing leadership is going to visit this site (if they haven't already.) I'll chalk this one up to Divine Providence! Crossing people, is God trying to get your attention?

MY PETITION TO TOM AND ALL LEADERSHIP AND ATTENDERS OF THE CROSSING!
Please come to the conference and see if what Eric Dykstra teaches matches up with the Bible. I suggest this for all pastors and attenders there. Don't dogmatically follow the orders of Eric Dykstra not to attend; you have every right to. In fact, if Dykstra is so confident that everything The Crossing does is according to the Bible [Tom declared that the Bible is The Crossing's final authority in the  "I Love My Church" video, right Tom?] then he should have no problem with people from his church going to the conference. After all, both sides can't be right. So if Dykstra is right, then the other side will be proven wrong.

Eric and Kelly, you too. If you are preaching a false gospel, don't you realize that you will go to Hell for all eternity unless you repent? Please, let the gravity of what you are doing sink into you noggins! Don't you fear a Holy and just God who will cast false teachers like you into fiery Hell? (If you want, I'll give you the book-The Holiness of God by R.C. Sproul- in my "God's Gift To You" feature. Heck, I'll even buy you a brand new copy).  If you have received visions of some sort, how do you do know for certain that they are not the work of crafty demons? Answer: You don't! so don't flatter yourself by thinking God is giving you visions.

You might not think it's possible, but you-Eric Dykstra-can actually be deceived into thinking that what you believe is gospel, but in actuality, it is not. I don't know if you are sincere yet deceived, or intentionally teaching a false gospel. Nonetheless Eric, I don't want you to go to Hell. Repent, confess, and God will forgive you. Then preach the True Gospel. God has given you the gift of public speaking, and you are very good at it. Please don't abuse that gift by proclaiming a false gospel! That will only get you to Hell.

COUNTDOWN:FIVE DAYS TILL THE CONFERENCE
In the two hours I was in Elk River I gave away all forty nine flyers, plus about fifteen gospel tracts.  I was handing out the tracts here and there at first, but finally figured out that giving out the tracts along with the flyer worked well. I have a ton of tracts and a ton of flyers. I plan on at least two more visits to Elk River or another community where the Crossing  has campuses.

Think of the impact we could have if just TEN  PEOPLE committed themselves to handing out fifty flyers before the conference! That's only ten flyers a day-but five hundred flyers total! Think of the impact if you doubled that effort! It does take a measure of boldness, which does not come by our own power, but by the power of the Lord. But I truly believe that if we get the word out about the conference by being honest about our concerns for the community, then we can make a big difference, raising people's awareness, and hopefully many more people will come to the conference!

LET US JOIN TOGETHER
I will gladly meet up with anyone who is serious about informing the public of the dangers of The Crossing church: just contact me. I plan on getting out Labor day sometime. If you are timid in your approach to people in the way I described, then come with me and I will demonstrate how easy it is. It's really not that difficult once you get the hang of it. I will keep all evenings open from now until the conference. I honestly don't think many people in Elk River know about the conference. But if we launch a campaign of sorts to get the word out, handing out hundreds and hundreds of flyers, then by God's grace, we will have a major impact in Elk River (And Zimmerman, and Big Lake, and Princeton).

Let's not be complacent and let this unique opportunity slip by. There is much to be done to pack the seats of the conference. The farmer who prays for good crops must still work in the field. Let's join together as Christians and contend earnestly for the faith!

Blessing in Christ, Casey

Why Christians must engage in spiritual warfare against The Crossing!

MY BATTLE AGAINST THE CROSSING JUST GOT PERSONAL!

Friday my wife Valerie told me that my niece's son had been invited to The Crossing by a friend. As soon as I heard that, I contacted him via message on Facebook, told him it was a dangerous cult etc, etc,  gave him a link to my blog, told him about the conference, and begged him not to go to The Crossing anymore. I think I got my point across. His answer was, "ok, I won't".

This is exactly what will happen if this cult goes unchallenged. It will cause even more pain and division among families and friends, destroy precious relationships, and ultimately, those who put their trust in a false gospel will go to Hell!

TAKING IT TO THE STREET

Tonight I will visit Elk River or one of the other towns that have Crossing campuses and get the word out about the conference. Hopefully I can get out at least one more time before the conference. I still haven't heard if The Crossing plans on opening up a campus in Anoka/Ramsey, because if that is their plan, then I think that would be a great place to do the Lord's work!  So if anyone knows, please tell me!!!

This will be a great opportunity to do some street evangelism. I printed up a bunch of flyers, http://004f597.netsolhost.com/fftf/doublecrossed2.pdf and stapled them to another flyer I made up. I also have a bunch of Gospel tracts to hand out too. If anyone wants to join me tonight leave a message and we'll meet up. I was planning on six till eight.

Here's the flyer. Feel free to copy, paste, and print. It does all fit on one page.

IS YOUR CHURCH A SAFE PLACE?
From churchabuse.com
http://www.churchabuse.com/
Here is a questionnaire to determine just how healthy your local church is. To find out how well your church ranks, answer "yes" or "no" to the following 12 questions:
  • Does your church tightly control the flow of information within its ranks?
  • Does your spiritual leader use public shaming as a method to gain the compliance of followers?
  • Is your spiritual leader intolerant of questions or critical inquiry?
  • Is your spiritual leader the exclusive means of knowing "truth" or receiving validation?
  • Does your spiritual leader have unreasonable fears about the outside world such as evil conspiracies or persecutions?
  • Are you discouraged to associate with former members, being warned that they are "evil" or "defiling"?
  • Is leaving your group to join another church equal to leaving God?
  • Does the surrounding community view your church as a cult?
  • Does your spiritual leader consider it evil persecution when criticized or questioned?
  • Do the goals of your spiritual leader seem to supersede any personal goals or individual interests?
  • Do you fear being rebuked, shunned, or ignored for expressing a different opinion?
  • Do former members often relate the same stories of abuse and reflect a similar pattern of grievances?
If you answered "no" to all of the above 12 questions, your church is very healthy. If you answered "yes" to three or more, your church is showing signs of being unhealthy. If you answered "yes" to six or more, your church is very unhealthy. If you answered "yes" to eight or more, your church is more than likely a full-blown authoritarian cult.

LETS GET THE WORD OUT CHRISTIANS!!!

CONFERENCE FLYERS
Katie sent me a link to a flyer on the conference to be held friday September 9th at Elk River High School. The cost is free, food donations requested. print a bunch up and hand 'em out or post them in public places. I would like to get out a couple times within the next week to hand out flyers and do some street evangelism in the process. If anyone would like to join me just let me know!

ADDENDUM: Does anyone know if The Crossing still intends on opening a campus in the Anoka/Ramsey area?

GOD'S GIFT TO YOU
I have yet to receive an entry in the "God's Gift To You" givaway! If I don't get anything by late next week, then I'll add another gift. The prior gift will roll over into the next weeks givaway if no one enters, so then someone would get two gifts.
