God's Gift To You: 9/1/2011

Welcome to the first installment of "God's Gift To You". The first givaway is a Christian classic written by R.C. Sproul, "The Holiness of God". It is a used paperback book in excellent condition.

What does it mean when the Bible speaks of God as "Holy"? I'll give you a hint. It is more than just moral purity. Holiness is the crowning attribute in which all of His other attributes are subsumed.  If you want to really understand the gravity of your sin you must first come to grips with the Holiness of God. Apart from knowledge of God's Holiness, all your sins will only seem trivial. I would put this book in the category of "Must Read"!

THIS IS HOW IT WILL WORK

  •  Roughly once a week I will post a picture and description of  "God's Gift To You" that I intend to give away; for example a book or cd. Then anyone who wants to participate can e-mail me at casey.nygren@parknicollet.com About a week later I will select and contact the person who will receive the gift.
  • I would encourage you to provide your spiritual background, whether you think you are a Christian or not, on what grounds you think you are or are not a Christian, and why you would like to receive that particular gift. I may use this information in making my decision, or I might just throw all names into a hat and pick one.
A FEW POINTS TO CONSIDER

  • I will contact you either by e-mail or cell phone if you are the winner. You can then give me an address where I can send your gift.
  • I may send an additional gift that applies to your current spiritual condition, circumstances, concerns, or questions regarding any point of doctrine that is a stumbling block to you.
  •  I will not post any of the winner's personal information on my blog to protect the winner from spiritual abuse.
  • The "God's Gift To You" feature only applies to those who attend The Crossing or any other member of a church that they suspect is abusive, legalistic, or preaches a false gospel. The gift will also apply to anyone who doesn't understand the Gospel, does not know if they are are a genuine Christian, know they are not a Christian, but are interested, or they want to know more about the character of God. .
  •  If you are a Christian with a solid understanding of the Gospel and everything that it entails, then please refrain from entering; I would rather give gifts to those who need it most.
  • You can be confident that I will not use your e-mail address for anything other than collecting information and receiving an address or cell phone number to send off your gift. I will not forward your information to any other enterprise, and I will not contact you for any other reason, unless you give me permission. However, you are free to contact me at any time.
  • I would be happy to meet with you or talk with you on the phone if you have any concerns or questions.
  • If you did not win the gift but think that you would benefit spiritually by receiving it, contact me and I will see if I have the resources to get you the same gift.
  • Your feedback on what you thought of the gift is welcome and encouraged.

New Feature to this blog: "God's Gift To You"

(Jesus speaking)
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor rust destroys,
and where thieves do not break in or steal;
21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19-21

I know The Crossing likes to give away "crap" like 3D t.v.'s, video gaming systems, Viking tickets, and even cars to bribe people to come to their church; crap that will just get stolen or eventually break down and rot away. You can't take your crap with you when you die. As pastor Bob Glenn quotes, "There are no U-Hauls behind hearses"

Crap itself is not a sin to own and enjoy; after all, who doesn't own a whole lot of crap?  I know I do. But crap can become an "idol" when our affections for it are elevated higher than our affections for the Christian God. [The sin of idolatry is one that is most detestable to the Lord God. It is a topic I would like to address in a future post.]

So, in order to counter The Crossing's "gifts of crap", I'll be adding a new feature to my blog and will be giving away a gift every week under the title,  "God's Gifts To You". I am doing this because I am concerned about people who buy into false gospels; they may be sincere in their beliefs, but believing a false gospel will only get you to Hell. Truth is the antidote to every false way, and that vast majority of the gifts I intend to give away explain what Scriptures teach.

RECEIVING CRAP VERSUS RECEIVING GOSPEL TRUTH

The enjoyment of crap will leave you empty and hollow. Your pleasure in it will eventually fade away and you will seek another idol to bring you happiness. No matter how much crap you own, no matter how much money you have, no matter how accomplished you are, no matter where you have been or what you have done in your life, your heart will never, ever be satisfied until you find perfect rest and pleasure in the Christian God who created you.

You see, crap has no intrinsic value, but the one True God is a Being of the highest, most exalted intrinsic value. He is the most worthy and precious Being ever to exist and is the source of everything good. Everything you enjoy that is not sin comes from the mind and power of God.
God does not want us to worship anything less than Him because he wants only what's best for us; God Himself is infinite in His perfections and He alone is worthy of our worship. It is pure folly for creatures made in His image to worship anything other than God who is infinitely valuable and can provide infinite pleasure.

When we finally break down, confess our sins to the Christian God, and receive salvation through faith in Jesus Christ alone, we also receive the gift of God Himself. It is my desire that "God's Gift To You" will help bring clarity to your spiritual condition and facilitate the restoration of the broken relationship with your Creator. If the idea of God being the source of ultimate awe and pleasure sounds boring or mundane to you, (I confess I struggle with this too) please consider the following...

THE AWESOMENESS OF THE CREATED ORDER

1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.
2 Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge.
3 There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard.
Psalm 19:1-3
  • Imagine the breathtaking awe you experience when you visit the Grand Canyon, see an explosive ocean sunset, a stunning mountain vista, or the delicate structure of a beautiful flower.
  • How about the pleasure of experiencing the serene sound of a gentle spring rain, the mystery of a crisp morning fog enveloping the surrounding countryside, the smell of fresh cut grass, the taste of an ice cold glass of water on a scorching hot day, and the brisk, invigorating feel of cool wind on your warm, sweaty body.
  • Think about the fearful awe you would feel in the presence of a massive earthquake, tornado, or hurricane.  Or how about the power of mighty ocean waves slamming into solid cliff walls and rocky terrain.
  • Now imaging the size and magnitude of the universe that God created; it has at least a hundred billion galaxies each containing an average of a hundred billion stars!
  • From the largest galaxy and the hottest star down to miniscule, mind-boggling, irreducibly complex systems inside every living organism, the intelligent code written in every DNA molecule, and the the fundamental particles of protons, neutrons, and electrons that make up all matter, it is all quite amazing, isn't it?
  •  And don't forget about the unfailing Laws of physics; gravity, electromagnetism, and the strong and weak nuclear forces. These must be perfectly balanced and fine-tuned by many orders of magnitude in order for the universe to be exactly as it is to sustain life.
  • Are you in awe of the magnitude, precision and beauty of the entire created order for life to even exist? I know I am. All these things are simply awesome to contemplate and behold!
THE INFINITE AWESOMENESS OF OUR CREATOR

33Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

34"For who has known the mind of the Lord,
or who has been his counselor?"
35"Or
who has given a gift to him
   that he might be repaid?"

36For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
Romans 11:33-36

  • If those things listed above captivate you and deeply move you, how much more so would the Creator and Sustainer of such things? Mountains and DNA molecules and galaxies and flowers and hurricanes and atoms and gentle spring rains and every other natural phenomena you can think of are mere reflections, hints, and shadows of the infinite Being, character, beauty, awesomeness, and holiness of God!
  • If the natural order totally blows your mind, then the God who created such things will totally blow your mind infinitely and eternally! Being in the unveiled presence of a Holy God will be infinitely more awesome than every single mind-blowing aspect of the created order put together!
  • God created it all and is sovereign over all. There is nothing unknown to him, there is nothing that can thwart His eternal purposes. When you think of God, all He is and how He has revealed Himself in nature, don't you think He deserves respect?
  • Because we are sinners, that is, we are born with a sin nature, we have absolutely no respect for the Christian God. Before we are "born again" (the act of regeneration that God alone initiates)  we actually hate Him and would dethrone Him if it were possible; after all, look at what happened to God when He came in human flesh: He was murdered by people like you and me. Protestant reformer Martin Luther said that we all carry in our pockets His very nails. Are you aware of those nails in your possession?
  • The LORD is God and we are not, but we were made to behold His majesty and glorify Him in everything we think or do. By living by faith in Christ and His finished work, all those corrupted by The Fall will be restored and we will be perfected in Him in our resurrected state, living in paradise and enjoying God forever. That's God's promise as revealed in the Scriptures.
THIS IS HOW IT WILL WORK

  •  Roughly once a week I will post, picture (or a link) and description of  "God's Gift To You" that I intend to give away; for example a book or cd. Then anyone who wants to participate can e-mail me at casey.nygren@parknicollet.com At the end of the week I will decide who will recieve the gift.
  • I would encourage you to provide your spiritual background, whether you think you are a Christian or not, on what grounds you think you are or are not a Christian, and why you would like to receive that particular gift. I might use that info in selecting a winner or just throw all names into a hat and pick one.
A FEW POINTS TO CONSIDER

  • Please provide contact information. I will contact you either by e-mail or cell phone that you are the winner.
  • The "God's Gift To You" feature only applies only to the following...

  1. Anyone who attends The Crossing or any member of another church that they suspect is heretical, abusive, legalistic, or preaches a false gospel.
  2. Anyone who doesn't fully understand the Gospel and want to learn more.
  3. Anyone who does not know if they are are a genuine Christian.
  4. Anyone who knows that they are not a Christian but are curious.
  5. Any member of the Back Door Ministries Support Group.
  •  If you are a Christian with a solid understanding of the Gospel and everything that it entails, then please refrain from entering; I would rather give gifts to those who need it most.
  • if there is no winner within a week, then that gift will "roll over" into the next week's givaway, giving anyone who enters the opportunity to recieve two gifts!
  • You can be confident that I will not use your e-mail address for anything other than collecting information and receiving an address or cell phone number to send off your gift. I will not forward your information to any other enterprise, and I will not contact you for any other reason, unless you give me permission. However, you are free to contact me at any time.
  • I would be happy to meet with you or talk with you over the phone if you have any concerns or questions.
  • If you did not win the gift but think that you would benefit spiritually by receiving it, contact me and I will see if I have the resources to get you the same gift.
Tomorrow September 1st I will reveal the first gift to be given away so come back and throw your name in the hat.
May God bless you, Casey

MARK YOUR CALANDER! UPCOMING CONFERENCE ON THE CROSSING CHURCH TO CHALLENGE THEIR TEACHINGS AND PRACTICES!

"Anonymous" left this in the comments section of my last post before vacation.

SAVE THE DATE!!
When Friday September 9, 2011@ 6:30pm
Where? Elk River High School, Elk River, MN
What? Chris Rosebrough, Pirate Christian Radio, "Fighting for the Faith", coming to town for a one night conference exposing the concerns/false teachings of The Crossing Church/Eric Dykstra.
Come hear and decide for yourself.
Cost? FREE!

I plan on attending this conference. Has Eric Dykstra been invited to defend his theology? I would be surprised if he ever showed up! I would also like to know from those putting on this conference how they are promoting this event. Flyers? Radio? Word of mouth? I would like to help get the word out any way I can!

And just a big "heads up" to those who attend The Crossing and also want to attend this conference. I am quite certain that Crossing leadership will get wind of this conference, if they haven't done so already. If that's the case, then you will likely be pressured or threatened not to attend the conference!

But Scripture has an answer to such strong arm tactics. 1 John 4:1 says, "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world."

Now, when the Apostle John talks about "every spirit", and "test the spirits", he is not necessarily talking about demons. I am a spirit being, so is Erik Dykstra and everyone else created in God's image. So the Bible, which Eric Dykstra affirms as The Crossing's final authority, is telling people to be on guard, cautious, and discerning. Many, many passages in the New Testament issue stern warnings about the presence and cleverness of false teachers. Don't believe everything you hear from pastors who claim to be Christians, including Eric Dykstra; compare their teachings and practices in the light of Scripture.

Are you a Christian? Whatever your answer, don't go by your feelings alone, because they will deceive you. And just because you said a sinner's prayer at the spur of the moment during a Crossing service doesn't mean that magically, you are a Christian. This is what Eric Dykstra would have you believe. Use Scripture to be the true yardstick of whether you possess genuine saving faith. The Apostle Paul wrote this, "Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you, unless indeed you fail the test?" (2 Corinthians 13: 5).

So if Eric Dykstra is at all consistent, then he should have no problem with people from The Crossing attend the conference to see if his church is indeed an abusive, legalistic, non-gospel teaching church. He should wholeheartedly endorse Crossing attenders to test themselves to see whether they are truely a Christian, or just being deceived into thinking they are.

Scripture teaches that no man has authority to teach something contrary to Scripture, including subjective visions supposedly from God that are claimed to be authoritative. If Eric Dykstra opposes the clear teaching of Scripture, per the two Scripture passages cited above, then he is opposed to the Christian God and is seeking to elevate his own authority as superior to that of the Christian God's.

So Crossing attenders, be bold! If Dykstra tries to manipulate you into skipping the conference, then confront him with Scriptures like the ones above. Ask him some tough questions and ask him to explain his views and practices with specific Bible verses and passages. Vague, rambling, non-Scripture specific answers just won't do. Let him know that! Is he at all defensive, angry, critical, or destabilized by your questions? Does he say that you must submit to his authority? If so, you may want to ask him why he is he opposed to the clear teaching of Scripture? And ask him what it is he is hiding.

Remember, the stakes are high; your eternal destiny, and the eternal destiny of others depends on a right understanding of the Gospel.

I'm back from vacation!

We got back on saturday after driving 13 hours from Red Lodge Montana. It was a great trip with camping, fishing, and enjoying God's creation. I love the breathtaking beauty of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. I'll post some pictures as soon as I can. Macro photography is my favorite mode of photography.

I'll soon be making a post about a new feature on my blog.

Saturate yourself with the Gospel: Wednesday August 17th.

NYGREN VACATION TIME!
Me and my family will be on vacation from August 18th through the 27th. We're doing a road trip out west to the Rockie Mountains for camping, fishing, and relaxing. I won't be blogging until after I get back on the 27th, so I would like to leave you with some links for you to access some great sermons and reading material to help you keep the Gospel central.

TRY A SERMON A DAY!
If you really want to advance your understanding of the Gospel, then let me encourage you to listen to a sermon a day until I get back to blogging again. I am not saying that you ought to attempt to listen to all the material I have available here; these are just some suggestions. But pick something on this blog and go with it. If every day is too challenging, try every other day. These men know how to preach the Gospel and do so with humility and reverence. You will be amazed at how liberating it is to saturate yourself with Gospel Truth every day!

VISIT MY POLL
You can check out the poll to let me know if you intend on listening to a sermon a day as I suggest. If the poll is closed, you can still post the answers in the comments section. And if you do make an effort to listen to a sermon a day and don't follow through, no big deal! Don't think of this as some sort of mandate, I'm not like that. It's just a suggestion to help you better understand the Gospel and it is for your benefit that you take advantage of the "Means of Grace" God has provided.

SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS
If you would like to share what's on your mind, it would be cool to know what you read or listened to and if it helped it bring you Gospel clarity and renewal. Once again, post your thoughts in the comments section. If you attend The Crossing, then how does the preaching there compare to the preaching suggested on this blog post.

NEWCOMERS CAN CHECK OUT PRIOR POSTS
If you are a newcomer to this site who attends The Crossing, or you left The Crossing, or got kicked out the backdoor, or anyone else for that matter, you can review some of my prior postings too!

ARE YOU A CHRISTIAN? REALLY? HOW DO YOU KNOW?
This first link is a four part series called What is a biblical Christian? A very important question to ask if you are not sure if you are really a Christian. It calls for self examination to see if you are a genuine Christian or not.

Here is the text that describes the series...

  • This is the first series that Pastor R. W. Glenn preached when he arrived at Redeemer in the fall of 2002. His overarching concern was that his new congregation would not have a false sense of assurance. Nothing could be worse than facing the Day of Judgment only to be surprised by the Lord's verdict. This four-part series calls believers to test themselves to see whether they are in the faith so that they may face the Judgment with confidence.
Here's the second sermon in the series, Heaven and Hell  preached by R.W. Glenn. Very powerful preaching that ought to humble sinners to dust! Understand what it means that God is Holy, Holy, Holy. You do not want to be in the presence of Holy God on Judgment day if you are still in your sins! If you missed the first part you should be able to access it in the link provided.

WHAT'S THE GOSPEL GOT TO DO WITH IT? ANSWER? EVERYTHING!
The Gospel_and_the_world-foundations_for_a_christian_worldview  is another series that is relevant to The Crossing. Eric Dykstra is obsessed with the unbiblical notion that if you are a Christian, then your ministry and service must be lived out only in the context of devotion to The Crossing church. That is simply not true. If you decide to listen to this series, then you will have a biblical understanding of what it really means to serve God and live out your Christian faith in every facet of your life; it involves much more than just being involved in church ministry.

This sermon series is preached by R.W. Glenn. Here is the text that describes that series...
  • The title tells it all - the gospel of Jesus Christ gives us the only perspective on life in the world that coheres with reality! This brief five-part series lays the groundwork for a  thoroughly biblical approach to life in a very good, yet fallen world.
THE RADICAL GRACE OF JESUS
Here are two sermons by Tullian Tchividijian,  Pictures of Grace: Part Two and  Pictures of Grace: Part Three. If you missed Part One, then you can  find it on the links. This series takes some of the stories of Jesus in the Gospels and gives you great insight on the radical grace as taught by the Lord Jesus. This is fantastic, soul sanctifying, heart changing Gospel preaching!

READING THESE POEMS REMIND ME SO MUCH OF ME AND HOW UNWORTHY I AM AND HOW GREAT GOD IS IN SAVING   PITIFUL SINNERS LIKE MYSELF
Here is a collection of puritan poems from the devotional book, Valley ofVision. (Don't let the word "poem" scare you) these are just a few examples from the book. This is deep, thoughtful, convicting, yet liberating stuff that embodies the essence of the Gospel. Check it out!  Try one. You can buy the book online.

JOHN PIPER FROM BETHLEHEM BAPTIST CHURCH RIGHT HERE IN MINNEAPOLIS
This is a quick, easy read from John Piper. Quest for Joy/ John Piper  Great stuff and full of Gospel Truth. He also has this series recorded and you can listen to the entire series if you want to get the full gravity of what he is teaching. Quest For Joy-sermons by John Piper

[And just a note on John Piper, he is a very animated, bold, and lucid preacher. He uses colorful analogies and unpacks Gospel Truth in ways that will keep you captivated. You really should give this man a try!] .

EAT SOME SOLID FOOD...
Here's another recent blog post from Solid Food Media, Gospel Shame. It's a simple short, Gospel centered post from R.W. Glenn.

LISTEN TO THIS LINK OR GOD WILL JACK YOU UP!
Now this is interesting.  Haven't listened to this one yet but I'll bet it's a hoot.  This is from the "Fighting for the Faith" radio program. And they play one of their broadcasts that covers a few interesting Christian related topics, but one thing in particular in the title of the broadcast  web page is this written in bold letters ERIC DYKSTRA: SUBMIT OR GOD WILL JACK YOU UP! So everyone out there, I am warning you right now, you better listen to this link or God will jack you up!

I NEED YOUR HELP!
God's people are called to contend for the faith and protect it from errors, Jude writes in Jude 1:3-4(emphasis added), "Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ."

......That means we proclaim the Gospel and refute heresies, false gospels, and false teachers. This blog is about spiritual warfare and our weapons are the Word of God, among other things, Ephesians 6:10-17. If you are a follower of this blog who has a history with The Crossing and you want to help engage in the war on Truth, or any other Christian who is concerned with what is going on at The Crossing, then please help get the word out about this blog. We can also do ministry in other ways too. I want to stop this cancer from spreading, and by God's grace I think we can all make an impact on the growth of The Crossing church. I have a couple of ideas and I am also open to any suggestions you might have.

SO LONG FOR NOW...
That should be enough to keep you busy for awhile and should help you keep the Gospel central while I am on vacation. Don't forget to take the poll!

Who is Righteous and who is not?

That's the million dollar question, isn't it? After all, God demands absolute moral perfection from you. Jesus said, "Therefore, you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Matthew 5:48). So unless you are absolutely perfect in thought, word, and deed every second of every day for your entire life, you are in BIG trouble!

Yet, the Bible speaks of righteous people all the time. Let's look at some examples...

OLD TESTAMENT EXAMPLES
In the Old Testament there are plenty of references to righteous people. Genesis 6:9 says that, "...Noah was a righteous man." Psalm 5:12 says "For it is You who blesses the righteous man, O Lord..."  The book of Proverbs is filled with verses like this, "Blessings are on the head of the righteous...."(Proverbs 10:6.)

NEW TESTAMENT EXAMPLES
In the New Testament are many more references to righteous people. James 5:16 states, "...The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much".  In 1 John 3:7, the Apostle wrote, "Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He (Jesus) is righteous." Jesus Himself affirms in Matthew 5:45 that there are both righteous and unrighteous people. "...For He (God) causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous."

IT APPEARS THAT THE BIBLE CONTRADICTS PASSAGES THAT AFFIRM THAT THERE ARE RIGHTEOUS PEOPLE
In the first chapter of the book of Romans, the Apostle Paul quotes an Old Testament passage, "...as it is written, "But the righteous man shall live by faith"". (Romans 1:17). Then in chapter three Paul seems to contradict that verse by quoting another Old Testament passage, "...as it is written, "There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands, there is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not  one"" (Romans 3:10-11, emphasis added).  The Old Testament prophet Isaiah says in Isaiah 64:6, "For all of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment." In Job 15:14 it says, "What is man, that he could be pure. And he who is born of a woman, that he could be righteous?". It says in Genesis 6:5 says this about all men, " And the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually". And yet the Bible says says just four verses later in Genesis 6:9, "...Noah was a righteous man."  Are these bonafide contradictions? The answer is "no" as you will see...

LET'S PUT THIS PUZZLE IN PROPOSITIONAL LANGUAGE...
  1. The Bible teaches that all people are not righteous.
  2. The Bible teaches that some people are righteous
Obviously both propositions can't be true at the same time and in the same sense. That would be nonsense!

SO HOW IS THIS APPARENT CONTRADICTION RESOLVED?
That depends on what the Bible means by "righteous" in each proposition.  Let's start by stating the biblical facts.
  • The Bible teaches that God is righteous. He is holy, He is morally flawless. He only does what is right. He cannot do anything bad because of His Holy nature. He is not Holy because He does only good things, He does only good things because He is Holy.
  • The Bible teaches that the totality of mankind is not righteous. We are sinners. We are morally corrupt, wicked creatures in rebellion against our perfect Creator;  every single one of us is born with a seething hatred for the Christian God (Yes, even that nice, little old lady down the street!) We cannot do any good thing because we have a sin nature. We are not sinners because we sin, we sin because we are sinners.
  • The Bible teaches that some people are righteous.
 THE RESOLUTION
We resolve this apparent contradiction by understanding that the sense in which all people are "not righteous", or "unrighteous" is not the same sense in which some people are "righteous" as taught in the Bible. So the word "righteous" has a different meaning in the first proposition than it does in the second proposition.

THE SENSE IN WHICH ALL PEOPLE ARE  NOT RIGHTEOUS
  • All of humanity is not righteous in the sense that we have all broken God's laws. "Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness" (1 John 3:4). Who can say they are morally perfect?
  • Lawlessness is not just performing sinful acts, it as also not doing what we ought to do as taught in the Bible. "Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin" (James 4:17).
  • Sin is also more than doing what we are not supposed to do, or not doing what we are supposed to do. Sin is a moral pollution that flows out of our corrupt nature. This internal corruption defiles every aspect of our lives; out thoughts, intellect, emotions, conscience, motives, inclinations, words, and deeds. Like I said before. We are not sinners because we sin. We sin because we are sinners". Just think about that for a moment...
  • ... Jesus teaches this internal corruption in Matthew 15:19-20, emphasis added, "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornication's, thefts, false witnesses, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man".
  • Before we become Christians, all we are capable of doing is sinning. We cannot "not" sin! I'll explain. The Apostle Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 10:31, "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God". Paul also teaches in Romans 14:23,  "...whatever is not from faith is sin".....
  • .....The totality of what Paul is teaching in these two passages is this. If your motivation for doing good deeds is not for the glory and the exhalation of the Christian God  (Specifically, the God of the Bible) through faith in Jesus Christ alone, then you are not doing anything "good". Every attempt you make to do good and please the god of your making, (which is idolatry), the Christian God sees as nothing but stinky, rotten garbage, a filthy menstrual cloth. Remember what God spoke through the prophet Isaiah, "For all of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment."  (Isaiah 64:6)
  • We have a corrupt sin nature, called "Original Sin" because Adam as our representative, broke God's law and we inherited a sin nature. "Therefore, just as through one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and death through sin (spiritual death), and so death spread to all men, because all sinned. (Romans 5:12)
So I think you have a good idea of what the Bible means when it says all people are not righteous. Now to unpack the second proposition...

THE SENSE IN WHICH SOME PEOPLE ARE RIGHTEOUS
  • God is righteous and just, which means He must do what is right. He demands absolute moral perfection from his creatures made in His image without the tiniest exception. Judicially, God cannot neglect our sins. He always acts according to His Holy and just nature. He must punish all sin, otherwise He would not be just.
It is obvious that we do not have the righteousness that God demands, which  begs the question, "How then is it that some are righteous?"
  • The sense in which some people are righteous is by receiving an alien righteousness, and that alien righteousness is the righteousness of Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:30 says, "But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us, wisdom from God, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption" (Emphasis added).
  • The Apostle Peter affirms that that those who are deemed righteous have received by faith, the righteousness of Christ. "Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 1:1 emphasis added).
  • God. speaking through the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah, declared the coming of Christ and that it is in His righteousness that sinners are pardoned and declared "Righteous". "For the time is coming," says the Lord, "when I will place a righteous Branch  (Jesus) on King David's throne. He will be a King who rules with wisdom. He will do what is just and right throughout the land. And this is his name: 'The Lord Is Our Righteousness.' " (Jeremiah 23:5-6).
HOW WERE PEOPLE IN THE OLD TESTAMENT "RIGHTEOUS" WHEN CHRIST'S COMING WAS STILL FUTURE?

You have to understand that God revealed His salvation plan of a coming a Savior progressively. This is called "Progressive Revelation". The Old Testament saints were justified by faith in what God had already revealed through prophets. They were trusting in what God was going to do in the future to wash away their sins by means of a Savior.

God's promise of a coming Savior goes all the way back to the third chapter in Genesis right after the fall of man through Adam's disobedience, God spoke to the serpent (Satan) and said, "The LORD God said to the serpent, “....and I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed;  He (Jesus Christ) shall  ]bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel.” (Genesis 3:15)  In Deuteronomy 18:15, Moses said, “The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him. Then again in verse 18, "I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command". There are countless other prophesies about the Savior to come who was fulfilled fulfilled in Christ.

The people in the Old Testament and all those alive before Christ's coming were justified by faith alone, just as the people in the New Testament period up to the present are justified by faith alone. The difference being, that people in the Old Testament period were saved by faith in God's promise of a coming Savior, while we in the Church age can look back in retrospect at the Savior that God had promised as revealed in the Person and work of Jesus Christ.

It is my understanding that in Greek, the language in which the New Testament was written, did not have a corresponding word for "righteous", or "righteousness". The Greek word that comes closest is "just" or "Justified". So when the Bible speaks of the a person being righteous, it really means a person being "just" or the "justified".

What exactly is justification? Easton's Bible Dictionary has a thorough explanation of justification....

"Justification"
"a forensic term, opposed to condemnation. As regards its nature, it is the judicial act of God, by which he pardons all the sins of those who believe in Christ, and accounts, accepts, and treats them as righteous in the eye of the law, i.e., as conformed to all its demands. In addition to the pardon (q.v.) of sin, justification declares that all the claims of the law are satisfied in respect of the justified. It is the act of a judge and not of a sovereign. The law is not relaxed or set aside, but is declared to be fulfilled in the strictest sense; and so the person justified is declared to be entitled to all the advantages and rewards arising from perfect obedience to the law ( Romans 5:1-10 ).

It proceeds on the imputing or crediting to the believer by God himself of the perfect righteousness, active and passive, of his Representative and Surety, Jesus Christ ( Romans 10:3-9 ). Justification is not the forgiveness of a man without righteousness, but a declaration that he possesses a righteousness which perfectly and for ever satisfies the law, namely, Christ's righteousness ( 2 Corinthians 5:21 ; Romans 4:6-8 ).

The sole condition on which this righteousness is imputed or credited to the believer is faith in or on the Lord Jesus Christ. Faith is called a "condition," not because it possesses any merit, but only because it is the instrument, the only instrument by which the soul appropriates or apprehends Christ and his righteousness ( Romans 1:17 ; Romans 3:25 Romans 3:26 ; Romans 4:20 Romans 4:22 ; Philippians 3:8-11 ; Galatians 2:16 ).

The act of faith which thus secures our justification secures also at the same time our sanctification; and thus the doctrine of justification by faith does not lead to licentiousness ( Romans 6:2-7 ). Good works, while not the ground, are the certain consequence of justification".

IMPUTATION
Justification is accomplished through "imputation". The best verse in all of Scripture on imputation is 2 Corinthians 5:21, "He (God the Father) made Him who knew no sin (Jesus Christ), to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (Christ).

Keep 2 Corinthians 5:21 in mind as I flesh this out. Jesus Christ's mission was twofold. One part of Jesus' mission was to take the punishment that we deserve for our sin. On the cross, all of the sins of every person ever to have faith in the Christian God, including those in the Old Testament, were  credited or "imputed" to Jesus Christ. Then God the Father treated Jesus as if He committed every one of those sins. And yet he was perfect and blameless. This satisfied God's legal requirement of sin's penalty keeping His righteousness and justice intact.

Jesus Christ also came in the flesh for another reason; a reason that is often overlooked by Christians. Jesus came to "do" what the first Adam failed to do. Christ came as the second Adam. Jesus kept all the demands of God's laws which Adam failed to do; this is the righteousness that God demands of us so we can boldly stand before Him blameless. The righteousness that Jesus accrued during His life and ministry is credited or "imputed" to those who confess Christ as Lord and Savior; when we receive Christ by faith, we are receiving Christ's righteousness as a gift.

SIMUL JUSTUS ET PECATTOR...
....This Latin phrase coined by Protestant Reformer Martin Luther means "Simultaneously righteous and sinner". All those who put their faith in what Christ has done on our behalf 2000 years ago receive His righteousness as a gift through imputation. So even though Christians are still sinners and we still sin countless times every single day, God looks at us as perfect as God Himself because we are cloaked in the perfect righteousness of Christ.

THIS IS THE BEST NEWS EVER!
Why? Because when we receive salvation through Christ by faith alone, by trusting in His finished work, we are adopted into God's family. God remembers our sins no more. All sins, past, present, and future are never held against us. It's like they never happened. Therefore, God is never mad at us when we sin. He doesn't get impatient with us because we are stuck in the same sinful pattern day after day after day. He does not look at our performance and judge us by how well we have done on any particular day. He does not complain when we don't measure up to His standard of perfect righteousness. His attitude toward you is always that of pure love and generosity.

You see, Christians don't have to "do" anything to gain God's approval because we can rest in what Christ has already "done". We never have to worry about losing our salvation by "not being good enough" because Christ was good enough on our behalf. There is nothing we can "do" to to lose our  righteous standing before God, because Christ paid the penalty; it is done, it is finished!

There is no more hostility between God and redeemed sinner, there is no condemnation , no hard feelings, no grudges, even when we don't do our best and our deeds are sinful. And as Christians, our good deeds are no longer filthy rags to the Lord because we have the right motive to do them, which is to glorify the Christian God and reflect His image by faith in His Son.

APPLICATION TO THE CROSSING CHURCH
I have listened to sermons by Eric Dykstra, and he has it all wrong. His theology is legalistic, among other things. Let me ask you some hard questions. If you  attend The Crossing,...
  • Do you base your standing before God on how well you serve Him at The Crossing?
  • Do you think that God is upset with you when you don't offer Him your very, very best; when you don't serve at the highest level you think you are capable of?
  • Do you feel guilt and shame because you have not performed to the impossible standard that Dykstra demands?
  • Do you think that God  blesses you more if you do more, and blesses you less if you do less?
  • Do you think God is happy with you based on your subjective feelings rather than on the objective Truth of Christ dying on the cross for sinners 2000 years and receiving His righteousness as a gift by faith?
  • Do you buy into the lie that you must give 10% of your income to The Crossing instead of giving only what is practical to you?
  • Do you feel guilty if you don't give as much as The Crossing demands?
If you have answered yes to any of these questions, then maybe you have adopted a legalistic mindset and are enslaved to an abusive church; a church whose  pathetic leader cares more about his stupid vision than shepherding Christ's redeemed people, ministering to those who are hurting, teaching the Bible, and proclaiming the Gospel. Christ doesn't want you to work, work, work, do, do, do, to gain His approval; you don't have to. He has already done what is needed so that by faith in Christ you are righteous in God's eyes.

If you are truly a Christian, then you will perform good deeds out of adoration,  love, gratitude, and loyalty to your Lord and Savior who purchased your salvation. Your good works don't save you but are the "fruit" of genuine saving faith. Jesus wants you to rest and rejoice in what He has accomplishes for you!

 PREACH THE GOSPEL TO YOURSELF!
Start preaching the Gospel to yourself. You can wake up every single day and say something like, "I am forgiven, not on account of my good deeds, service, and faithfulness, but because Christ paid the penalty I deserve. He has given me His righteousness as a gift through faith. His finished work 2000 years ago gives me liberty to glorify God in whatever situation I am in. My ministry does not mean that it must take place in the context of church. I can fulfill God's calling and  live a life that is pleasing to Him, even in the most boring, mundane circumstances. I dare not trust my subjective feelings, but rely on the objective Truth of what the Scriptures teach regarding my righteous standing before God. I need not be burdened with misplaced shame and guilt because I don't think I have done enough to please God. I can boldly declare that God will never look upon me disapprovingly, even when I keep committing the same stupid sins over and over again. In His sight I am perfect".

THE BOTTOM LINE IS THIS
Even as Christians we are all miserable, wretched, vile, wicked, scummy, rebellious, traitorous, Hell deserving sinners. You really are much worse than you think! But Christ is the friend of sinners who know that those awful things are true of themselves. Those who know that they are morally bankrupt  and  have nothing to offer God. They must rely on Christ's finished work on the cross to pay their sin debt and receive the gift of Christ's righteousness to be approved of God. Christ doesn't want you to be weighed down with unbiblical rules, codes, and church ordinances that bring unjustified guilt and shame upon you if not obeyed. He wants you to rest in Him and what He has done for you.

Who is righteous and who is not? Christ is righteous and you are not. But by faith in Christ you can receive His gift of righteousness and no longer fear condemnation. Praise the Lord!

Saturate Yourself with Gospel Truth! Sunday August 13th.

The antidote for The Crossing Church's poision is the Gospel. Familiarize yourself with the Gospel so you can recognize a counterfeit gospel. Protect yourself from ravenous wolves like Dykstra. I think I'll make this a once a week thing.

Here's a blog entry by Billy Graham's grandson Tullian Tchividjian, You're free to stay put". Eric Dykstra wants to work people to death! This is what the enslaved people at The Crossing Church need to read and understand.

Here's a great resource to help you be more discerning called Critical Issues Commentary. This is what CIC is all about. You can either read the articles online or you can sign up to recieve their CIC newsletter every other month. I don't agree with Bob DeWaay's dispensationalist leanings, otherwise he is really solid!

You should also consider watching or listening to Tullian Tchividjian six part series titled  Pictures of Grace: Part One. This is one Gospel getting dude! I'll post Part Two next time.

Here's a Gospel saturated sermon, Gospel Mission, Bob Glenn preached at the end of July on Titus Chapter three. This is just a fantastic sermon and it explains certain elements of the Gospel very well.

RW Glenn started a his much anticipated series last Sunday on Heaven and Hell, this is part one of five in the series. Eventually I'll post the links to all five sermons as they become available. Maybe I will contrast that with what Eric Dykstra teaches about Judgment Day, Heaven and Hell in his "The End is Near" series.

Just so you know, I'll be on vacation starting thursday of this week. I'll supply you with more Gospel Truth to keep you thinking and learning while I am away in the Rockie Mountains.

Eating Crow...

Before I began my critique of The Crossing's beliefs, I went to their church website and looked it over, and I didn't find anything like a doctrinal statement. As I was preparing my next post "Critique of The Crossing's Beliefs-The Trinity: Part Three", I kept on thinking, "The Crossing must have some form of official doctrinal statement."

So I revisited their website, looked it over, and in plain sight I discovered that there is indeed a formal "Statement of Faith", which totally blew my mind! I don't know how long it's been there, but it was probably there all along and I just happened to overlook it.

I looked this Statement of Faith over and for the most part, it is an orthodox Statement of Faith, with Scripture references to support their beliefs in all points, with the exception of two. I did not check all the Scripture references in relation to each individual point, but overall the Scriptures I noted are consistent with orthodoxy. So judging by The Crossing's "Statement of Faith" alone, it appears to be a legitimate church.

I HAVE MADE MISTAKES....
  1. I should have looked over The Crossing's website more carefully, then I would have found their Statement of Faith.
  2. I should have contacted The Crossing and asked if they had a Statement of Faith available for me to review.
So I offer my sincere apology to The Crossing church and to anyone who follows this blog for jumping to conclusions. I was basing my critique on what information I had available at the time. I will make an effort to learn from my mistakes.

BUT...
....just because a Church's Statement of Faith is orthodox on paper does not necessarily mean that it is orthodox in practice. I have already proven in "Critique of The Crossing's beliefs-Part Two: The Bible" that they have violated the Law of Non-Contradiction. There are testimonial from people who affirm that The Crossing engages in spiritual abuse. And just by listening to any sermon preached by Eric Dykstra, I know that he preaches a false gospel. He is just another slick, sly wolf in sheep's clothing.

Since my prior criticism was directed at their beliefs as detailed in the "I Love My Church" video, I cannot continue my criticism there. When I continue my critique of The Crossing, I will do so along other avenues.

I do not recant any of my prior posts, because there is much to be learned about false teachers and false gospels within those posts, among other important details.

So stay tuned in to this blog; I still believe that The Crossing is a cult, and I will aggressively refute their false teachings and practices. Until next time!!!

Critique of The Crossing's beliefs-The Trinity: Part Two

THIS IS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: IT WILL TAKE THREE PARTS TO CRITIQUE THE CROSSING'S BELIEFS ON THE TRINITY, NOT TWO...
....In my last post I thought I could wrap it up in two parts. I was wrong. I don't want my posts to be too long at the same time I want to be thorough. I know that what I have written on the Law of Non-Contradiction in my last two posts may have either bored you to tears or challenged you intellectually; it's tough, I know. But I believe it is vital to have a basic understanding of the Law of Non-Contradiction; after all, you want to be thoroughly prepared biblically and logically when critiquing a Christian doctrine or practice.

There is some more difficult material in this post, so please bear with me. Focus your attention and try to get a good grip of any material you may have just skimmed over in my last two posts, starting with "Critique of The Crosssing's beliefs-The Bible: Part Two", then "Critique of The Crossing's beliefs-The Trinity: Part One..." You will soon have a  greater appreciation for the complexity of Christian doctrine and the precision it takes to articulate Christian doctrine in language that is easily understood.

THE NECESSITY OF EXPLAINING THE TRINITY WITH UTMOST PRECISION...
As with any explaination of Christian doctrine, Scripture is the final Authority; it is the standard by which we measure man's explaination of Christian doctrine. We can learn much from reputable Christian pastors and thinkers throughout church history as long as we don't abandon the Reformation principle of Sola Scriptura. Fuzzy, sloppy, inadequate explanations simply will not do! Trinitarian doctrine must be explained thoughtfully, succinctly, rationally, clearly, and with depth, lest errors creep in and distort the truth of God's character.

What follows is an excellent example of explaining trinitarian doctrine with clarity, precision, and depth. After all, the word "Trinity" is not even in the Bible; however that does not negate the triune nature of God as revealed in the Bible.

LOUIS BERKHOF'S BOOK "SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY"  EMBODIES WHAT IT MEANS TO EXPLAIN CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE WITH CLARITY, PRECISION, AND DEPTH
Professor Louis Berkhof (1873-1957) was a Reformed systematic theologian. He attended both Calvin theological seminary and Princeton theological seminary. He had written over 24 books in his life including his Magnum Opus, "Systematic Theology"; a widely acclaimed volume that arranges everything that the Bible teaches on major Christian doctrines into an orderly and coherent system. From cover to cover it is seven hundred eighty four pages long. I highly recommend this book as a reference tool.

 HOW MUCH PRECISION IS NECESSARY?
Just to be clear, Systematic Theology proper is like a box within a box within a box within a box, etc.  The entirety of Berkhof's book is divided into six "Parts", as in "Part One". Then under each Part there are "Sub-Headings", under each Sub-heading you have "Chapters", and under the Chapter are "Sub-Chapters". Then under the Sub-Chapters there are "Numerical points", and under the numerical points are further "Sub-Divisions", as in a,b,c,d,e,f, and g, etc. That should give you a general idea as to the precision Christian doctrine ought to be explained in a systematic way.

 LET'S GET SPECIFIC
Now we will dive into the details; this is where things get a bit complicated so you may want to eat a bowl of Wheaties or chug a Red Bull to get yourself mentally prepared!

"Part One" of Louis Berkhof's "Systematic Theology" explains everything the Bible teaches on "The Doctrine of God". In Part One there are two "Sub-Headings". Sub-Heading  number One explains "The Being of  God", while Sub-Heading  number Two explains "The Works of God". In Part One alone there are fourteen chapters.

In Part One: "The Doctrine of God" under Sub-Heading number One, "The Being of God"  there are eight Chapters as follows...
  1. The Existence of God
  2. The Knowability of God
  3. Relation of the Being and Attributes of God
  4. The Names of God
  5. The Attributes of God in General
  6. The Incommunicable Attributes
  7. The Communicable Attributes
  8. The Holy Trinity
In Part One: "The Doctrine of God" under Sub-Heading number Two, "The Works of God", There are six Chapters as follows...
  1. The Divine Decrees in General
  2. Predestination
  3. Creation in General
  4. Creation of the Spiritual World
  5. Creation of the Material World
  6. Providence
As you can see there is much to be learned about The Doctrine of the Christian God.

LETS TURN OUR ATTENTION TO THE TRINITY
Notice in Berkhof's book, under Sub-Heading One of Part One, is Chapter Eight titled, "The Holy Trinity". Under Chapter Eight there are three Sub-Chapters, A, B, and C. And under each Sub-Chapter are numbered points, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. and these numbered points have further subdivisions, a, b, c, d, e, etc. What professor Berkhof teaches on the Trinity alone encompasses eighteen pages!

Now I'll give some examples as written in Berkhof's book, "Systematic Theology"; and this only scratches the surface of Trinitarian doctrine.

GETTING DOWN TO PRECISE DEFINITIONS AND EXPLANATIONS...
Remember that Part One of Berkhof's book explains everything that the Bible teaches about "The Doctrine of God".  Under Part One is Sub-Heading One, "The Being of God". So Chapter Eight of Part One under Sub-Heading One explains everything the Bible teaches about the Trinity. There are three sub-chapters in Chapter Eight, A,B, and C. We'll examine Sub-Chapter B, titled, "God as Trinity in Unity".

Under Sub-Chapter B are four numerical points. For example, Point #2 is titled, "SCRIPTURAL PROOFS FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE TRINITY". Under point #2 are sub-divisions; "a" titled, "Old-Testament proofs", and "b" titled "New Testament proofs; "a" and "b" contain the proof texts used in the Bible, and Berkhof's explanation thereof to support the doctrine of the Trinity.

Numerical point #3 under Sub-Chapter B is titled, "STATEMENTS OF THE DOCTRINE OF THE TRINITY", Numerical point #3 is followed by a brief explanation of the subdivisions to come...

"The doctrine of the Trinity can best be discussed briefly in connection with various propositions, which constitute an epitome of the faith of the Church on this point."

Under numerical point #3 are six "sub-divisions", stated in propositional language. Following each proposition is a thorough explanation of that particular proposition. These six propositions are lettered  a,b,c,d,e, and f, respectively. Stating and explaining these six propositions alone takes 3 pages.

To keep matters brief I will only state the propositions  of  a.b.c.d.e. and f; I will not include the explanation of the propositions. These propositions will give you a greater understanding and appreciation of the Trinity compared to The Crossing's pathetic attempt in the "I Love My Church" video.

The six propositions of point #3, Sub-Chapter B....
  • a) "There is in the Divine Being but one indivisible essence."  (This proposition is followed by a long paragraph explaining proposition "a".. A similar explanation occurs under all six subdivisions).
  • b) In this one Divine Being there are three Persons or individual subsistences, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • c)The whole undivided essence of God belongs equally to each of the three Persons.
  • d) The subsistence and operation of the three Persons in the Divine Being is marked by a certain definite order.
  • e) There are certain personal attributes by which the three Persons are distinguished.
  • The Church confesses the Trinity to be a mystery beyond the comprehension of man.
THE END, FINALLY!
O.K. I'm sure that by now, every synapse in your brain is fried; so, so sorry about that! The point of this post is that frivolous and  fuzzy explanations of a particular Christian doctrine do not demonstrate the true depth and magnitude of that particular doctrine as explained in Scripture.

In my next post I will finally wrap up "Critique of The Crossing's beliefs-the Trinity. I promise you that this will be less taxing on your brain! Or will it?

Critique of The Crossing's beliefs-The Trinity: Part One...

WHAT DOES THE CROSSING BELIEVE ABOUT THE TRINITY?
Now that I have exposed the absurd and contradictory nature of The Crossing's first doctrinal point, "We believe the Bible is God's word and totally accurate. It is out final authority", (See "Critique of The Crossing's beliefs-The Bible: parts two and and three) it is time to expand into uncharted territory and address what The Crossing believes about the doctrine of the Trinity.

Doctrinal point number two of The Crossing is written as follows, on the "I Love My Church" video...

"We Believe the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit."

Pastor Tom gives his commentary on Crossing belief number two as follows...

" ...We also believe the Trinity. Now notice; God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. God, God, God. Three separate names: inseparable. They are one.

Then Eric Dykstra interjects the following commentary...

"...And this is what separates us from being a cult. You realize that, people that are cults, that are part of a cult, don't believe the Trinity. That's a good indication your dealing with a cult and not the truth. Well, Christians for two thousand years have believed in this thing called "the Trinity". We're just normal, everyday Christians; it just looks a little different when you come in the door."

Pastor Tom takes over the commentary now...

"So we package things maybe a little differently, but like pastor Eric said, Christians have been believing this for two thousand years. We're not doing anything, creating anything new now. We're just packaging it differently".

THE TRINITY IS NOT EASILY EXPLAINED
The Doctrine of the Trinity is a very mysterious, complex and often misunderstood doctrine. Throughout church history confusion over the doctrine of the Trinity had spawned many heresies. So it is wise for pastors and theologians to explain Trinitarian doctrine thoroughly and with precision, lest inadequate explanations lead to false conclusions of what the Scriptures teach about the triune nature of God.

THE CROSSING'S COMMENTARY ON WHAT THEY BELIEVE ABOUT THE TRINITY DOES NOT EXPLAIN OR CLARIFY ANYTHING!
The commentary given by pastor Tom and Pastor Eric in the text provided is the most shallow, inarticulate, idiotic, inconclusive, subjective, and philosophically incoherent commentary I have ever heard (Well, not really; there is much worse to come!) ! I mean, this thing is a train wreck!

THE DOCTRINE OF THE TRINITY IS NOT A CONTRADICTION
Many people misunderstand Trinitarian doctrine, and falsely conclude that the idea of the Trinity is a contradiction. It is not. Remember in "Critique of The Crossings beliefs-The Bible: Part Two..." I  explained the Law of Non-Contradiction . If you are unfamiliar with the Law of Non-Contradiction, then I suggest that you review one or both of the prior two links, just so you don't get lost in the following discussion.

REMEMBER THE FORMULA FOR THE LAW OF NON-CONTRADICTION
  •  A cannot be B and non-B at the same time and in the same sense.
FILLING IN THE VARIABLES:
  • "A" is "God", "B" is "one", and "non-B" is "three".
TO PUT THIS IN PROPOSITIONAL FORM:
  • "God cannot be one and three at the same time and in the same sense." That is true. If I believe that, "There is only one God" and "There are three Gods", at the same time and in the same sense, that would violate the Law of Non-Contradiction, and you would want to call my psychiatrist!
  • It is essential then, to be specific when defining the variables: "A" refers to "the Christian God", "B" refers to God as "one in essence (or substance)", "non-B" refers to God as "existing as three Persons (or subsistences) ".
  •  The correct way to frame the doctrine of the Trinity in propositional form is as follows. The Christian God is one of "B", and three of "non-B". "The Christian God is one in essence, existing as three Persons".
  •  The sense in which B and non-B differ is in compliance with the Law of Non-Contradiction. Now if I believe that God one of "B" and God is three of "B" at the same time and in the same sense, then I am caught in a contradiction and have abandoned all logic and reason.
ANOTHER WAY TO FRAME THE DOCTRINE OF THE TRINITY IN NON- CONTRADICTORY PROPOSITIONS

  • God exists as three Persons
  • Each Person is fully God
  • There is only one God.
So by carefully defining the variables and putting it all together in propositional language that is true, clear, and concise proves that the doctrine of the Trinity does not violate the Law of Non-Contradiction. This also prevents false ideas of the Christian God (heresy) from sprouting in the soil of a Church's confusing and inconclusive doctrinal position on the Trinity.

MORE TO COME ON THE TRINITY
I was hoping I could critique The Crossing's doctrine of the Trinity in one post. Unfortunately There is much more to be said, and I don't want my posts to be too lengthy. So I will finish up my critique on the next post.

Critique of The Crossing's beliefs-The Bible: Part Two

SUMMARY
At the end of my last post I left you hanging with an important question as to whether The Crossing really believes that the Bible alone is their final authority. All participants of the discussion group in the "I Love My Church" video unequivocally agree that the Bible is their final authority. As doctrinal point number one states, "The Bible is God's word and totally accurate. It's out final authority." No ambiguity there.

THE ANSWER....
Well, the answer to the question is a resounding "NO"! And I will prove it. Remember that at approximately 19 minutes into the video, pastor Tom quotes the first of ten doctrinal points of The Crossing, then gives his commentary on that point. It is obvious that pastor Tom and everyone else in the discussion group are in complete agreement that the first doctrinal point is true.

A BIG PROBLEM FOR THE CROSSING CHURCH!
The problem with that assertion is that at about 28.:46 minutes into the video, that's less than ten minutes later, the discussion group violates the Law of Non-Contradiction. That might sound like a difficult concept to understand but it's actually very simple, as I will explain.

The Law of Non-Contradiction is the basis of all logic and reason. Without it, the lunatics would rule the earth!  Christian apologist and philosopher Ronald Nash explains The Law of Non-Contradiction in the audio link provided above.

Nonetheless, I will help you understand the Law of Non-Contradiction right now.

THE LAW OF NON-CONTRADICTION FOR DUMMIES!

The formula for the Law of Non-Contradiction is as follows:
  • A cannot be B and non-B at the same time and in the same sense.
Now I will give an example in two sentences, otherwise known as "propositions".
  • The dish is full of vanilla ice cream.
  • The dish is full of green beans.
Now let's fill in the variables:

"A" is the dish. "B" is the ice cream. "Non-B" are the green beans.

So if I am holding a dish and I stated the two propositions to you...

  • The dish is full of vanilla ice cream.
  • The dish is full of green beans.
...and I told you that both statements are true at that very moment, then you would think that  I have lost my mind. That's because it is impossible for the dish to  be full of only vanilla ice cream and only green beans at the same time and in the same sense.

If you said "Well, it's green bean ice cream" then you have altered the sense of one or both of the propositions stated at the beginning. The sense in which I stated the first proposition at the beginning was that I was referring to pure vanilla ice cream with no green beans in it.

YOU CANNOT DENY THE LAW OF NON-CONTRADICTION!
If you deny that the Law of Non-Contradiction is true, then you have confirmed yourself that the Law of Non-Contradiction is true. Remember the formula, "A" cannot be "B" and "non-B "at the same time and in the same sense. Let's take a closer look, shall we?

The propositions...
  • The Law of Non-Contradiction is true.
  • The Law of Non-Contradiction is false.
 The variables...
  • A" is the "Law of Non-Contradiction", "B" is 'true", and "non-B" is "false".

If you believe the Law of Non-Contradiction is false, then you have come to that conclusion using the Law of Non-Contradiction. It is obvious that the Law of Non-Contradiction cannot be both true and false at the same time and in the same sense. Yet, in coming to your conclusion, you must have reasoned something like, "The Law of Non-Contradiction is either true or false, but it cannot be both. I believe the Law of Non-contradiction is false".

It is impossible to deny the Law of Non-Contradiction because you must employ it in reaching your conclusion that it is false! Believing that the Law of Non-Contradiction is false is a logical absurdity.

HOW DID THE CROSSING VIOLATE THE LAW OF NON-CONTRADICTION?
You are probably wondering, "How did the discussion group violate the Law of Non-Contradiction?" I'll explain. At 28:46 minutes into the video, they have finished talking about The Crossing's "beliefs" and are now going through The Crossing's "values", one by one.

There are eighteen values in all, called, "The Code". Pastor Jason clearly states  and gives commentary on value number two, which is, "We are united under the visionary". And I also quote this word for word from the video...

""We are united under the visionary." Now the visionary here is Eric. The Crossing is built on the vision God gave pastor Eric. And we will defend that vision.

Now what does that mean? That means that we do church the way he wants us to do it. And me as a campus pastor I can't go up to Zimmerman and decide I am going to preach, because that's not the vision that we have for this church that God gave to Eric.

And we defend that when people go, "Well, maybe we should do it this way", and we are like, "no, no, no, no no, no, no, you don't understand, God gave Eric this vision, we did it this way because we don't want to argue with God, basically...

...we don't want to be like, you know Eric's not God, were not saying Eric's God, (Eric interjects, "I'm not God") he's got a vision from God and we have decided with our lives that we are going to follow that vision. And we are going to stick to that, and if we ever just decide that we don't want to be part of that vision, then we can go find a church and serve somewhere else.

That's o.k., we're not telling anybody that they have to unite under this vision that Eric got from God; you can do whatever you want. But we think it's a really cool vision, we're on board with it, and we're going to defend it, and we're going to stick to it."

After pastor Jason's commentary on value number two, there is complete agreement among those in the discussion group that Jason's comments on value number two are true and accurate. In the passage above, pastor Jason said no less than five times that Eric Dykstra had received a vision or visions from God. He also said The Crossing is built on the vision  God gave Eric.

FILLING IN THE VARIABLES
Now let's recall the formula of the Law of Non-Contradiction...

  • A cannot be B and non-B at the same time and in the same sense.
And now I will apply the Law of Non-Contradiction to the discussion of the participants of The Crossing church, "I Love My Church". video. I will fill in the variables and then disclose  the propositions.

The variables are as follows: "A" is the Bible, "B" is "The Bible is our final authority"., "Non-B" is "The Bible is NOT our final authority.

So to put this in propositional language.
  • The Bible is our final authority.
  • The Bible is not our final authority.
Now it is absolutely clear that both propositions cannot be true at the same time and in the same sense.  And yet, the discussion group affirm that BOTH propositions are true!
The first proposition "The Bible is our final authority" is explicitly written down, stated, and explained by pastor Tom. The second proposition "The Bible is NOT our final authority" is not explicitly stated by the discussion group.

Yet pastor Jason implicitly affirms the second proposition as true. The participants of the discussion group agree that Eric Dykstra had received a vision or visions from God, and that they must do church the way Eric wants them to do it, according to the vision God gave Eric.  That means that the Bible is not The Crossing's final authority, Eric Dykstra is!

That violates the Law of Non-Contradiction because the members of the discussion group affirm both propositions as true at the same time and in the same sense. And biblically speaking, there are a multitude of problems with what The Crossing believes, their values, their practices,  and the way they treat people that explicitly contradicts what the Bible teaches. So all who "partner" at The Crossing must believe things and do things  exactly as Eric's says. Does he tell them to believe things and do things if it clearly contradicts the Bible? Yes he does.

WHAT DOES SCRIPTURE SAY ABOUT SCRIPTURE?
Let's examine some Scriptures. First, in 2 Peter 3:14-16  The Apostle Peter confirms that the writings of the Apostle Paul are Scripture.

Paul confirms in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that Scripture alone (The Bible) is sufficient for everything man needs to know. The Reformation doctrine of Sola Scriptura explains the sufficiency of Scripture. Alleged special revelation outside of the Bible in the post-apostolic age are not the Word of God.

[Read the link to Sola Scriptura; it is a long read, but is essential that you get a sense of the orthodox view of Scripture. The Sola Scriptura page refers to a document penned in 1996 called the Cambridge Declaration , which addresses the erosion of Christian beliefs and practices in the sphere of modern evangelicalism in America. I would recommend that you read this also.]

At the very end of the Bible in Revelation 22:18 the Apostle John states that  anyone who adds  to the prophesy of the book of Revelation will result in catastrophe for that person. So if anyone received actual revelations from God in the post-apostolic age, then those revelations would be considered Scripture and another book of the Bible could be added onto the book of Revelation.

But the Apostle John  has not left that consideration open for discussion. He is saying, "The Bible is finished." Special revelation from God ends with the Book of Revelation. God has not revealed Himself in unique and personal ways since the end of the New Testament era. The canon of Scripture is closed.

THE FOOLISHNESS OF TRUSTING REVELATION OUTSIDE OF THE BIBLE
Something is either the Word of God or it isn't. There is no middle ground. The Bible is the Word of God. Eric Dykstra's "visions" are either lies he made up himself or the work of Satan and his demons.

Does Eric Dykstra even realize that if he received actual revelation from God through visions, then those  revelations would be considered Scripture? You could  then add Dykstra's  visions from God to the Bible after the book of Revelation and call it Scripture, which the Apostle John sternly warns not to do.

Besides, how does Eric Dykstra know with absolute certainty that the visions he received are from God? The apostle Paul says in 2 Corinthians 11: 13-14 that Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. That means that if you think you are receiving revelations and visions from  God, as Eric Dykstra does, you are actually being deceived by Satan.

THE CHURCH IS SUBORDINATE TO SCRIPTURE
The Scriptures teach that the church of Jesus Christ is subordinate to Scripture, as detailed in the conclusion of the Cambridge Declaration confesssion on the doctrine of Sola Scriptura...

"Biblical Authority
  • We believe that the Scripture is the supreme written norm by which God binds the conscience, because it derives this authority from God through divine inspiration. Also, that the authority of the Church is subordinate to that of Scripture (Mt. 5:17f; Jn. 10:35; I Pet. 1:12; I Thess. 2:13; 4:2; II Thess. 2:15; 3:15; I Cor. 14:37).
  • We believe that the confession of inspiration, infallibility, and full authority of Scripture is vital to a sound understanding of the whole Christian faith."
Unfortunately Eric Dykstra has twisted this Biblical teaching, making Scripture subordinate to him.

I believe that my analysis of the first doctrinal point of The Crossing church is irrefutable and has dealt a lethal blow to The Crossing's logically absurd way of thinking. But there will be more analysis to come, much, much more! And as I have said before, When I get done with The Crossing, they won't have a biblical leg to stand on!
